Background:
Upon its inception in 1948, the diocese of San Fernando was the hotbed of communism
under the Hukbong Makalaya ng Bayan, taking advantage of the gap between the rich and
the poor, pitting the have-nots against the haves, inciting social unrest. Guided by the Holy
Spirit, the first bishop, Msgr. Cesar Ma. Guerrero DD, put our Catholic faith into action.
The province of Pampanga was entrusted through the Blessed Mother under the title of
Virgen de los Remedios to the Santo Cristo del Perdon.
The two statues were brought in procession to every town and barrio of the province.
People were gathered in parish churches and chapels to pray and to deepen our faith. This
was accompanied by service to the poor through the "lamak" which really meant as gifts
for the poor. Thus faith and charity flourished. The devotion rapidly grew. Conversions
followed. Miracles happened. Class tensions were eased and relative peace reigned.
In 1956, the Vatican issued a canonical decree for the crowning of the statue of the
Virgen del los Remedios. 70,000 devotees witnessed this in front of the capitol on
September 8, 1956. Ever since the coronation has been re-enacted on the liturgical
birthday of the Virgin Mary. The visitation of the statues to every sitio and barangay
continues to this day.
